How PJSI Vets Candidates Before They Reach Your Jobsite | Project JumpStart

In Students by Emma Shirey

One question we hear from employers consistently: how do you know they are ready?

It is a fair question. The answer is worth walking through, because it is one of the things that most clearly separates a PJSI placement from a hire off a job board.

Here is what happens before a graduate ever reaches your door.

They Apply to the Program

This is not passive. Candidates come to PJSI intentionally — through community referrals, workforce partners, and direct outreach. The people who show up already have motivation behind them. We are not pulling from a resume database.

They Complete the Training Curriculum

Our workforce readiness program Project JumpStart covers hands-on trades fundamentals, OSHA safety certification, and job readiness preparation. It asks a real time commitment. Candidates who finish it have already demonstrated something about their follow-through before an employer ever meets them.

They Are Assessed by Our Staff

We know our graduates. Not as a file, but as people. We know how they show up, how they handle feedback, what trades they are drawn to, and what kind of work environment is likely to be a good fit. When we connect a candidate to an employer, that context comes with them.

They Get Introduced to the Industry

Many of our graduates have had employer introductions, site visits, or direct interaction with our partner companies before graduation day. By the time they are available for hire, the construction world is not unfamiliar to them.

Their Portfolios Are Visible Before You Make Contact

Through our partnership with TradeScouts, every PJSI graduate has a professional portfolio on our Talent Board — certifications, trade interests, and availability, all in one place, accessible directly from our website with no login required. You can get a real picture of a candidate before the first conversation happens.

None of this eliminates the need for your own hiring judgment. What it does is shorten the distance between posting a role and finding someone worth bringing on.

Meet the Team Behind the Process

Our next Lunch + Learn is June 17th — in person, by invitation, for construction employers only. Come see the program, meet our staff, and leave with a clear picture of what a PJSI partnership looks like.
